The link will also serve as a connection to the border checkpoint to mainland China for passengers of the western part of the New Territories.〔(Legislative Council - Northern Link and Regional Express ) February 2006〕 The Northern Link will start at Kam Sheung Road and end at Lok Ma Chau, where it will terminate at the East Rail Lok Ma Chau Spur Line station. Proposals recommend a new station to be built at Chau Tau for interchange between this link and East Rail Line. Other benefits for constructing this project is that it will significantly cut journey times for certain trips (for example from Yuen Long to Fanling) as well as significantly reduce costs for these trips and also relieve the large number of passengers using the East Rail Line by diverting some of the passengers to the West Rail Line.
